The cleaning of teeth, i.e. the removal of dental plaque and tartar from teeth to prevent cavities, gingivitis and gum disease – severe gum disease causes at least one-third of adult tooth loss. We cater for patients who want to improve or enhance their smile, whether they need it for veneers, teeth whitening or a complete smile make-over. Professional teeth whitening can be done either in the dental chair or by purchasing your at-home kit from Bekker Dental.

Preventative dentistry is a key part of our practice, prevention is better than cure. Routine cleanings, full mouth examinations, routine radiographs and fluoride application ensures prevention or early detection of problem areas. We recommend visiting a dentist once every 6 months. Fillings are done to treat minor to moderate decay and destruction of a tooth.

Paedodontics is the dental treatment of children. We, at Bekker Dental, are a family oriented dental practice and we treat children of all ages. We encourage parents to bring their children from as young as age two.

Crowns are dental restorations otherwise known as ‘caps’ which are coverings that fit over teeth. Crowns may be necessary because of broken down old fillings, fractured, chipped or sensitive teeth. Crowns are also used to improve the appearance of natural teeth that are malformed, malpositioned or discoloured. Bridges are used to replace a missing tooth by placing a ‘cap’ on one or two teeth on either side of the opening.

Root canal therapy removes infected nerve tissue within the root of the tooth. The hollowed-out tooth is filled with an antibacterial filling and the tooth is ‘crowned’ for protection, should it be necessary to improve long-term success.

Implants, done internally at Bekker Dental, are titanium screws that provide support for a permanent fixed option to tooth loss, following extraction. Restoration of implants are also done at Bekker Dental. Dentures are used to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Dentures that are available include plastic or chrome cobalt dentures.

A very effective method to lighten the natural colour shade of teeth, without the removal of any tooth surface. We offer two options for teeth whitening, including an option of having it done in- chair by one of our dentists or by seeing one of our dentists for a consultation and the impressions for your at-home teeth whitening kit.

Veneers is a thin layer of material replicating the look and feel of a natural tooth, but is placed over the tooth to improve the aesthetics of a tooth or smile or to protect the tooth’s surface form damage. Other reasons for choosing veneers are to brighten your teeth, to straighten your smile, to correct issues such as discolouration, fractures or chips.

Orthodontics is a dentistry specialty focused on diagnosing, preventing, managing, and correcting misalignments of teeth and jaws, along with irregular bite patterns. Orthodontic treatments options include traditional or conventional braces, clear aligners (also known as invisible braces) and removable retainers. Bekker Dental & Aesthetics offer all of these options, tailoring treatment plans to best meet our clients’ specific needs most effectively.

A smile make-over is the use of various combinations of cosmetic dentistry to reinvent or improve your smile, to give you the one you have always dreamt of. After consultation with your dentist, the diagnosis will be discussed with you to determine the best possible treatment plan.

The use of digital dentistry allows us to make use of an intraoral scanner rather than the conventional impression procedure to commence with treatments. By digitising this process it allows for higher quality of work, even more accuracy and for our valued patients to see every step of the process on screen for them to better understand it. Digital dentistry are used to take impressions, detecting problem areas in the early stages, for the planning of implant placement, smile designs and the careful monitoring of treatments over time.

We also assess and treat dysfunction of the jaw-joint. Digital x-ray systems are quick to view, and due to the very low radiation that is required for the procedure, it makes it very safe for the patient. Conscious sedation is used to put a patient to sleep in the chair while treatment is performed.

This award-winning technology ensures superb 3D panoramic images in seconds and enhance our team’s diagnostic abilities, offering more accurate views of patients’ dental anatomies. This allows for more accurate treatment plans with increased success.

Aesthetic Treatments

Botox is a purified protein used to inject into muscles, blocking the impulses from the nerves, thus allowing the muscles to relax and soften. This gives the area, e.g. the face a revitalised, wrinkle free appearance. The continuous relaxation of these muscles leads to wrinkle reduction. Botox is most often used on the forehead and around the eyes to reduce frown lines.

Dermal fillers consist of a hyaluronic acid, a natural element that is found in the skin. This gel-like substance is used to safely inject in areas such as the cheeks, under the eyes, jawline, the lines around the mouth and lower area of the nose, and most commonly the lips. The fillers help plump up those areas, softening the facial lines, wrinkles, creases and any scars.

    FAQs

Bekker Dental & Aesthetics are contracted to most medical aid plans for general dental work and/ or treatments, thus aligning our charges with the respective schemes. Besides offering cost-effective rates, we handle the paperwork for claims on your behalf, streamlining the administrative process for you.

However, it’s important to note that most medical aid schemes do not cover procedures considered as advanced or specialised dentistry, such as specialised or microscopic root canal therapy, and also not any cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening, veneers, implants, and full-mouth rehabs. For these treatments, a consultation with one of our dentists is advisable. Following the consultation, clients can expect to receive a comprehensive treatment plan with an accompanying quote, for the client’s approval before the commencement of the agreed treatment.

Our billing system is transparent and fair, extending the same basic medical aid rates to private patients, using Discovery Health rates as a benchmark. Private patients are however required to settle bills per appointment, either upfront or as outlined and agreed in the treatment plan and approved quote.

For any further enquiries regarding our administration process and/ or fee structures, please contact us via e-mail or telephone for more information.

We are contracted to most medical aids, and our charges for essential (non-cosmetic) procedures are in accordance with these arrangements. Our standard consultations cover a check-up, teeth cleaning (scale & polish), and two bitewing x-rays of the molar teeth.

Comprehensive consultations for procedures like dental implants, bone surgery, wisdom teeth extractions, specialised roots canals and smile makeovers often involve a crucial component, namely a CBCT (3D) scan. This very necessary advanced imaging procedure incurs an additional cost, which may not always be covered by medical aids. Despite this, the CBCT scan is indispensable for precise diagnosis and treatment planning in these specialised dental procedures.

This award-winning technology ensures superb 3D panoramic images in seconds and enhance our team’s diagnostic abilities, offering more accurate views of patients’ dental anatomies. This allows for more accurate treatment planning with increased success, especially pertaining to advanced treatments such as  implants, veneers, root canals, extractions and smile makeovers.

What are invisible braces or clear aligner therapy?

Invisible braces, also known as clear aligners, are the lightweight, nearly invisible alternative to conventional braces to address the cosmetic and/ or orthodontic needs of patients. These custom-made aligners (think of it as a very thin, crystal clear tray, similar to the teeth whitening trays) are virtually invisible when worn and are designed to gradually move teeth into the desired positions, allowing clients to have the perfect straight smile they have always dreamt of. Not only are these aligners much more discreet and nearly invisible, but it’s also removable when needed, making it a much more convenient option as supposed to traditional metal braces. The making of these clear aligners involve the use of advanced 3D digital technology to design a bespoke treatment plan catered to each’s client’s individual needs.

What can I expect during the clear aligner therapy / invisible braces treatment?

Clear aligners, also known as invisible braces, follow a gradual treatment plan, generally spanning 4 to 6 months. The process includes multiple phases of aligner therapy, with each phase requiring a new set of aligners worn for 3 – 4 weeks at a time. These discreet aligners are worn consistently, except during meals, drinks, or oral hygiene activities such as brushing and flossing. The duration of treatment varies based on the individual’s specific needs and preferences/ desires. This, along with the severity of the case, influences the number of phases required to achieve the desired outcome and, subsequently, the estimated timeframe for completing the treatment.

Who can receive clear aligner therapy?

Clear aligner therapy is generally suitable for individuals (advisably 18 years & older) with mild to moderate orthodontic issues, such as crooked or spaced teeth. However, the eligibility for clear aligners depends on the specific case, and a consultation with one of our dentists is necessary to determine if you are a suitable candidate for this treatment.

Pregnant individuals, those who are expecting, and breastfeeding mothers are eligible for this treatment, as are individuals who have undergone orthodontic treatment in the past. Generally, severe orthodontic cases may not be ideal for this treatment; however, during consultation, the most suitable treatment plan will be discussed with the patient.

What are the pros & cons of clear aligner therapy?

Pros of clear aligner therapy include their much more discreet appearance than conventional braces, shorter treatment period, removability for eating and oral hygiene, and reduced discomfort compared to traditional braces. However, cons may include limitations in treating severe orthodontic issues and non-compliance in wearing the aligners consistently will have a negative effect on achieving effective results.

What clear aligner system or brand do you use?

Bekker Dental & Aesthetics employs the Clear Correct system by the internationally renowned Straumann company. The superior local support from Straumann has enabled us to exceptional treatment plans, ensuring optimal, long-term results for our clients. While other reputable brands like Invisalign, Crystal, Utilign, Align Technology, SureSmile Aligners, Reveal and more, are comparable in quality, we have chosen Straumann’s Clear Correct as our preferred partner for clear aligner therapy.

What is the cost of clear aligners/ invisible braces?

The cost of clear aligners are similar to traditional braces, but can in some instances be slightly more or less costly, since it’s all dependant on the unique case at hand. Clear aligner therapy varies based on individual factors such as the severity of the orthodontic case, the specific treatment plan, the amount of phases required, and the duration of the treatment in totality. Invisible braces or clear aligner treatments are typically customised to each patient’s unique needs, influencing the overall cost.

To determine the most accurate estimate, it is recommended to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists, who can assess the specific requirements and provide a detailed treatment plan, outlining the various phases, treatment timeframe and associated costs.

    What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of biocompatible materials, typically titanium and is surgically placed into the jawbone. They provide a stable foundation for replacement teeth, such as crowns or dentures, restoring the function and aesthetics of missing teeth, due to extraction. Restoration of implants are also done by our qualified dental surgeons.

What does the typical implant procedure/ treatment entail?

The dental implant process typically involves several phases, including the below:

    1. Consultation and Planning:
    • Assessment of oral health and examination of the jawbone.
    • Development of a personalised treatment plan.
    1. Surgical Placement:
    • Placement of the implant into the jawbone during a surgical procedure.
    • Allowance for a healing period, during which the implant integrates with the bone.
    1. Abutment Placement:
    • Attachment of an abutment to the implant, which connects it to the replacement tooth (i.e. crown).
    1. Impressions and Model Creation:
    • Creation of impressions or digital models of the teeth to customise the replacement tooth (i.e. crown).
    1. Crown Placement:
    • Attachment of the custom-made crown to the abutment, completing the implant treatment and/ or restoration.

Throughout these phases, careful monitoring and follow-up appointments are essential to ensure proper healing and successful integration. The specific details may vary based on the patient’s individual case and the treatment plan developed by one of our dental surgeons.

What is the cost of an implant?

The cost of an implant may seem relatively expensive, however there is no better, artificial alternative to restore the function and aesthetics lost due to the extraction of a natural, original tooth. Dental implants are a significant investment in enhancing function, comfort and quality of life by providing a fixed and permanent solution to missing teeth.

Various factors can influence the cost of an implant, including, but not limited to – the brand and quality of the actual implant screw used, the need for bone grafting or not, the amount of soft tissue grafting required, whether a sinus-lift is require or not and laboratory fees. The list goes on and this is where the challenge of giving an estimate without a prior consultation becomes very tricky.

At Bekker Dental & Aesthetics, we thus kindly recommend a comprehensive dental consultation with one of our dentists, in order to asses and devise the best suited treatment plan for each of our clients. During the consultation a detailed treatment plan will be discussed with the patient, followed by a formal quotation to accompany this treatment plan.

Veneers is a thin layer of material, usually porcelain or composite resin, replicating the look and feel of a natural tooth, but is bonded or placed over the tooth to improve the appearance of a tooth or smile by enhancing colour, shape, straightening of teeth, fixing discolouration, chips or fractures, and overall aesthetics. Another reason for choosing veneers may be to protect the tooth’s surface from damage.

What are the different types of veneers?

There are two main types of veneers, namely porcelain veneers and composite veneers.

    1. Porcelain Veneers:
    • Made of thin, durable porcelain.
    • Custom-designed in a dental laboratory.
    • Known for their natural appearance, durability, and resistance to staining.
    • Require some enamel removal before placement.
    1. Composite Veneers (also known as injectable moulding):
    • Crafted from tooth-coloured composite resin material.
    • Applied directly to the teeth and shaped by the dentist.
    • Generally more cost-effective than porcelain veneers.
    • Can be completed in a single dental visit.
    • May be a bit more prone to staining over time compared to porcelain veneers.

What is the cost associated with veneers?

The cost of veneers can vary based on several factors, including the type of veneer, the amount of veneers required, the location of the veneer, the current tooth surface scenario, the complexity of the case, the need for tooth preparation, and the experience level of the dentist performing the desired treatment.

Due to all these variables, it is a challenge to provide a comprehensive and relevant quote without any prior consultation. A comprehensive dental consultation with one of our dentists is thus always advised in order to asses and devise the best suited treatment plan to address the client’s unique dental needs. During the consultation various treatment options will be discussed, followed by a detailed treatment plan and an accompanying quotation based on the recommended treatment plan.

Smile make-overs is the use of various combinations of cosmetic dentistry techniques and digital dentistry to transform and/ or enhance smiles, providing our clients with the smile they’ve always envisioned.

A consultation with one of our highly skilled dentists is required, upon which the diagnosis will be discussed with you to determine the best possible treatment plan. This detailed plan will be shared with you, along with an accompanying quote.

To initiate the process, a consultation with one of our dentists is required. During this consultation, the diagnosis and vision for your smile will be thoroughly discussed to identify the most suitable treatment plan. Following this, a detailed plan, along with a corresponding quote, will be provided for your consideration.

Endodontics, often known as root canal therapy, focuses on preserving natural teeth to avoid extraction. The procedure involves removing infected nerve tissue from the tooth’s root canals. After hollowing out the tooth, it is cleaned and disinfected by filling the canals with antibacterial material, aiming to heal the tooth and alleviate symptoms.

To enhance precision and ensure a minimally invasive procedure, Bekker Dental & Aesthetics employs a dental microscope (also referred to as microscopic endodontics), ensuring greater patient comfort and improved treatment success.

At Bekker Dental & Aesthetics, we make use of advanced digital dentistry technology in our practice in order to best serve our patients.

Digital dentistry refers to the use of advanced digital technologies in various dental procedures, diagnosis, treatment planning, and the creation of dental restorations. It involves the integration of computerised or digital components to enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and overall quality of dental care.

Key aspects of digital dentistry include:

    1. Digital Imaging and Radiography:
    • Digital X-rays and imaging techniques provide detailed views of the teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures for precise diagnosis.
    1. Digital Impressions:
    • Traditional molds or impressions are replaced by digital scanning devices to create accurate 3D models of the teeth and oral structures.
    1. Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM):
    • CAD/CAM technology allows for the design and fabrication of dental restorations such as crowns, bridges, and veneers using computerized systems, often with same-day delivery.
    1. Intraoral Scanning:
    • Handheld intraoral scanners capture detailed images of the teeth and oral tissues, eliminating the need for traditional impression materials.
    1. 3D Printing:
    • 3D printing is utilized for the fabrication of dental models, surgical guides, and even some dental prosthetics.

With the help of digital dentistry, we at Bekker Dental & Aesthetics, aim to improve efficiency, precision, and patient experience while allowing for more personalised and effective dental treatments.
